We have just spent a lovely week in the South East of South Australia. Robe is a beautiful little town and fishing port on the Limestone Coast and was the landing place for approximately 16,000 Chinese immigrants in the 1800's who came to Australia hoping to find gold in Victoria, which was a long and arduous trek of about 400 km through the bush to the Victorian goldfields.

| The Obelisk, Robe |
The Robe Obelisk was built in 1855 on the point at Cape Dombey. It is quite a significant landmark and quite a few years ago we were able to walk right up and round it but now it is fenced off due to erosion of the soft sandstone cliffs. It was built as a daytime navigational aid for vessels entering Guichen Bay to the south near Robe.

The Robe Lighthouse was built in 1972 on the western edge of Robe township to replace the Cape Jaffa lighthouse.

Long Beach, Robe
Long Beach is open for vehicles to drive on the beach at 40 kph and at 25kph if people are on the beach, so it is a great beach for a drive or just to sit and watch and wait for the sunset. We waited for the sunset but it wasn't spectacular but it was still lovely sitting in the cool evening.
