A-Z of Australia

I am trying a new idea for my blog as our travels are not as frequent as they used to be, so I hope you will find it interesting. I will post some pictures of Australian towns we have visited over our many years of travelling and will go alphabetically through with some information if I can.

I am starting with Adelaide, although it is not a town but a city, and the capital of South Australia. I have lived here all my life and it is a lovely city and a good one to start with (I am a bit biassed).

Adelaide - Houses

Houses in Adelaide are typically bungalows, many dating from the 1920's. There are many lovely older homes built in the late 1800's and early 1900's as well as modern two storey homes.

Gardens

Adelaide also has many lovely public gardens and one that we visit regularly is the Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens just a few km's from the city in the Adelaide hills.

Among the many interesting things that make living in Adelaide very pleasant, is the birds that we have in our suburban gardens. The pictures below were taken in our garden.

Port Adelaide

The port area of Port Adelaide is very interesting once you take the time to have a good look around. It hasn't been developed like many port areas of other cities but it is home to many old buildings and the Maritime Museum is really worth a visit. There have been many plans to develop the area but not much has happened except there are some apartments that overlook the port area but many of the original features of the port have been demolished and other parts are still original.

Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the North Parade of Port Adelaide. It was first lit in 1869 at the entrance to the Port River near Outer Harbor. In 1901, it was moved to the Neptune Islands and relocated to the current location in 1986.

Beaches

Adelaide's beaches are only a few km's from the city and are very popular in the summer months as we do get very hot summers. In the school holidays we used to spend lots of time there and even go down after work and have picnics on the beach and enjoy the sunset (until the mossies drive us away!)

Buildings - CBD

The first surveyor-general of Adelaide, South Australia, Colonel William Light designed a layout and development programme for the city. This plan is now known as "Light's Vision".

To promote recreational use of the river in the CBD, Torrens Lake was created in 1881 with the construction of Torrens Weir. The lake is located in the heart of Adelaide city, between the weir and Frome Street Bridge and is now used for rowing, dragon boating and powerboat racing as well as for Adelaide’s iconic Popeye trips.
