The old Blacksmith Shop

We looked around the Old Blacksmith Shop where the volunteer Blacksmith was demonstrating his skills.

I never realised these were made here for the War Memorial in France

If these walls could talk

We drove around the towns of the Valley and discovered some interesting old vehicles, or Garden Art, as they are sometimes known.

Mosaic Monday #27

Mosaic Monday - Western Australia

In 2009 we travelled to Western Australia  for our first caravan adventure.  It was a 3 month trip and we did approximately 16,000 km on mostly bitumen roads, and only a few times we unhooked and travelled on dirt roads.
Lake Argyle, WA

Lake Argyle is Australia's second largest freshwater man-made reservoir which was made by damming the Ord River and is 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour, and is part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme.

Boab Trees

The Boab Tree is unique to Australia and is found in the Kimberly region of Western Australia.  It is related to the Baobab tree and is sometimes called the Bottle Tree and can reach up to 15 metres high.

The Boab Prison Tree
The Prison Tree is a registered Aboriginal Site. Visitors are requested to respect the cultural sensitivity of the site and not climb the tree. The massive ancient Boab Prison Tree is believed to be around 1,500 years old.
Derby, Western Australia

Derby, Western Australia

Derby is a small town in the Kimberly region with a population of around 3,300 people.  It is located on King Sound and has very high tides with the difference between low and high tide of 11.8 metres.

The seed pod of the Boab tree is often carved by the local  people and sold to tourists (we bought this one  and got permission to take his photo).

Myall's Bore, Derby

The long trough near Derby is 20 metres long and could handle 500 bullocks at a time. Built in the early 1900s, the impressive historic trough provided water for up to 1,000 head of cattle at a time. It is said to be one of the longest cattle troughs in the southern hemisphere.

Summer and Spring Flowers

There are not many summer or autumn flowers in my garden at the moment so here are some I took during Summer and Spring.

Summer Flowers in my garden
Only one of these flowers is in my garden, but I love the bright colours of the flowering gum and the Blackberry is considered a weed and most people poison them but if you are lucky you can still find them growing on the side of the road and we used to go "blackberrying" in summer but they are hard to find now and it is often too hot in summer to pick them and sometimes too difficult to get to them.

And more garden flowers
The apricot rose is called Evelyn and was a gift for my 40th birthday so I have had it for 30 years...eek I am getting old!  The lilac came from my parents' garden and I would have had it for 40 years, as well as the apricot iris which came from my parents' garden.  The wattle is another long term resident but they now come up self-sown so not sure of its age and we have several of them now.  The Grevillea has been in our garden for probably around 7 years too.   Having flowers in my garden is a great pleasure and also good memories. It makes me realise that I liketo be in one place for a long time!  We have been married for 50 years and we have live in the same house for 50 years.  It sounds like I don't like change, but we love travelling and have visited many countries as well as travelling extensively in Australia, but I do always love to come home.
