Q for QUORN, South Australia

QUORN, SA

Quorn is an historic town in the mid north of South Australia, about 335 km north of Adelaide.

We have stayed in Quorn a few times and passed through it on our way north.  As we like anything to do with trains and railways, Quorn is a good place to enjoy the Pichi Richi Railway.

During World War II it was an important railway junction but in 1957 it was closed due to washaways on the line and the increased traffic which placed extra demands on the line, and a new standard gauge railway line was built from Stirling North to Brachina. In 1973 the Historic Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society opened the railway for tourists to travel on the steam train to Woolshed Flat and return.

Morning tea at Woolshed Flat

Inside our carriage
The steam train winds its way through the hills and over some bridges before stopping at Woolshed Flat where we were able to buy morning tea of scones, cakes and drinks while the train was turned around on a triangle ready for the return journey.  It was a lovely way to spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Flinders Ranges.

I don't know as I've ever seen a train with seats down the sides of the cars. Looks like a very pretty ride. Was it harder to look out the windows or just as easy to look over the people's heads across from you or turn in your seat?

Rita, I think it is a bit unusual to have seats like that, but we could look across or turn sideways to view the scenery, and the children just knelt on the seats with heads out the window (with parents holding them!)Thanks for your comment.

We have been too Quorn and taken the railway ride. I didn't think the caravan park was up to much though.

Gosh it's been forever since I've seen or heard a steam engine train. I'd love to once again!
