Toll House at Glen Osmond |
As we headed up the South Eastern Freeway, we passed the Toll House which is a landmark as we go into the Adelaide Hills. In 1844 when the road was opened as a gateway to the hills and to other major towns it was decided to build the Toll House, a hexagonal building, to collect a toll to cover some of the costs of the building of the road. These days we don't pay a toll and only 3 years after the toll was introduced, it was decided to abolish the toll as it was unfair to agriculturists in the area.
Heysen Tunnel |
As we continued on the freeway we entered the Heysen Tunnel which was constructed in 1998 to bypass some of the dangerous corners which were hazardous and most South Australians would remember the old Devils Elbow which was a particularly bad corner on the old road.
Signage to the Gardens |
We headed off and this was the first sign we came across!
There are many areas that provide seating and good opportunities for photos. We decided to take a slightly different path to our last time here in Autumn 2019. I took this photo to compare with our last time here.
We sat here for a while but a gardener started up a blower and disturbed the peace so we didn't stay long.
The leaves have fallen from most of the trees |
Sculptures along the way |
A touch of colour here and there |
The reflections on the lake look so much better in the photos, as there was a very slight ripple on the water which I thought would not make for a good photo.
Nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andrew, it was great to see the gardens in a different season.
DeleteLove the social distancing sign.
ReplyDeleteThe Mt Lofty Ranges are beautiful (and it is too long since I have seen them). It looks as if those gardens would be spectacular whatever the time of year.
EC- Yes the Mt Lofty ranges are lovely and we don't get out to see them often enough and they are on our doorstep.
DeleteJust marvellous to see. Never been there and should go.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see those old trees and the shape of their branches, the scenery is lovely.
That sign for distance made me laugh - it's a beauty actually with that kangaroo..
Margaret - you should come and visit SA when the borders open! That sign was a good one,
ReplyDeleteLooks like a beautiful place to visit - especially with the autumn colours in the trees. I had to smile at the "social distancing roo" sign. Have a good week, and thank you for visiting my blog last week.

What an outing you had. I love gardens any time of the year!!
ReplyDeleteSo many awesome photos
ReplyDeleteThat garden would be lovely any time of year I think. You captured some lovely colours and I like the natural curves of the sculptures.
ReplyDeleteIn spite of living so close, I've never been to the Mt Lofty Gardens. Once the restrictions are properly lifted I'll have to see if I can get a bus up there. With my camera of course.
