After a few days in the beautiful village of Herberton enjoying the Historic Village and the Waterfalls, we hit the road again.
The weather was very foggy and visibility was pretty poor but we slowed down and got through the Misty Mountains on the Longlands Gap Road.

A foggy morning drive |
Our first stop was Ravenshoe where we stopped for an early lunch and a quick look around but as we had visited here on a previous trip we didn't spend long but did get a few photos of some wooden sculptures that we had missed before. There is always something different to see the second time around, Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland and is a historic timber town,
Ravenshoe is located 1,676 km north from Brisbane, 121 km south-west of Cairns via Gordonvale and Malanda and it is 920 m above sea-level.

On the way to Innot Hot Springs we noticed the large ant hills again.

More ant hills along the way |
We then passed through Innot Hot Springs and Mt Garnet then on to Greenvale for fuel.
|
We got caught behind this Wide Load for an hour or more so it slowed us down a bit |

Driving through the Forty Mile Scrub |
Mt Garnet was built as a mining community in the 19th century and tin, copper and garnets were mined there. Mt Garnet also has some of the best cattle producing properties in Queensland.
After a good overnight stay at Fletcher Creek we headed off for another day of travelling. Our destination was Clermont, another mining town.
.
Next morning we were off again and into Charters Towers, but not to stay just to top up our supplies and then on to Clermont where we booked into the caravan park for the night. We had another day of mostly driving with only a few stops along the way.

Some nice scenery , but those giant ant hills look pretty scary would sure stay away from those.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the photo tour. I never seen any hills that big.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debby, yes some of them are huge and sometimes people dress them in beanies, bras, t-shirts etc.
DeleteI wonder how ravenshoe got its name! I’m sure there is a story there. I think it’s my first visit to your blog. Do you travel in the caravan in the photo? That is my dream!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cynthia for your comments. The name is supposed to have been chosen because a copy of Henry Kingsley's novel Ravenshoe was found discarded nearby. We have a caravan with ensuite and travel in it during our winter as I don't like the cold weather and we enjoy going north where the weather is warmer during our winter. I hope your dream comes true and you get to travel.
DeleteSuch awesome photosn
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo-Anne, I am glad your are enjoying them. I sometimes think I don't seem to get many good photos as a lot of them are taken out the car window! It's difficult to stop with a caravan in tow and there has been a lot of traffic on the roads up in the north, more than when we were there a few years ago.
