Winton

We arrived in Winton from Longreach,  a distance of about 200 km, so not a long day of driving which is how we like it.

We have stayed in Winton before but this time we booked into the Pelican Caravan Park which was walking distance to most of the tourist attractions.

We drove around to see Arno's Wall which we have seen before, but it is a bit of a special story about Arno who is very creative and the 2 metre concrete wall is filled with any spare parts and other bits and pieces to create a work of art.  It is also surrounded by a nice little park which had some very bright bougainvilleas.

After setting up, we walked to the Waltzing Matilda Centre and spent about 2 hours there.  We were surprised to find that there was a lot more to see than just the main building, but several more outside areas with displays and other buildings as well so it took a while to see everything.

The lovely Mulla Mulla

Another attraction in Winton is the Musical Fence.  It is an assortment of old bits and pieces assembled together and if you have a good imagination you can actually play music!  The Fence is another instrument that you can "play" music on.

The next day Ron went off on his own to see the Truck Museum and I stayed back at the caravan to clean and tidy up and was happy that I had some time to get things organised again.  When Ron got back we both walked up the street to look at a couple of shops including a craft shop/gallery and then checked out the hotels as they were advertising a singer and a poet at the North Gregory Hotel tonight and then an outdoor theatre movie night at 7pm so we decided we would go to the pub for the entertainment and a meal and then to the outdoor theatre as it was all within walking distance.

The poet and singer were great and we had a good meal at the pub, but when we got to the theatre, there was a line of people waiting, and nothing happening.  After quite a while, someone got a message to say the projector was not working and there would not be a movie night.   Everybody was disappointed but we could do nothing about it so walked back to the caravan and had an early night.

  1. Lovely to have a look around Winton. I last lingered there when I was 19 and passed through without stopping many times when I lived in Mt Isa in the 60s and 70s. All so long ago! Nice that it now has some tourist attractions and that wall looks terrific. Shame about the movies!
