Small Living

These beautiful roses are from the garden in our village

We had planned to have a week away to our favourite place, the Flinders Ranges, in South Australia but the weather turned wet and many parts of South Australia are flooding.  We also thought about going across the border to Victoria as my husband wanted to visit a Steam Traction event but that was also cancelled due to flooding there.  Then the weather here turned wet and cold so we decided it was best just to stay at home in our small villa.  We have been here now for almost 12 months, and are enjoying our smaller home with less housework, less garden  and less maintenace.  We thought we would get away more in our caravan but as it has been a very wet and cold winter and now Spring hasn't really been much better so far, we have spent far too long here inside.

There are plans to get away in a few weeks' time, depending on the weather, so I will post some more of our travels then.  Having complained about the weather, we are now having some warm days and even warmer to come so it has been great to sit outside and enjoy the warmth.

We moved in here with most of our furniture from our large house and thought it would fit in, which it did, but our lounge room here looked much bigger when it was empty, and now after 12 months we decided the large burgundy leather lounge suite was just too big and overpowering in this more modern setting.  We have spent most of the last couple of weeks going into almost every furniture store within a reasonable distance and had almost made our minds up only to be told there was a 3 month or more wait for making and delivery.  So back to the drawing board, well my hand drawn map and measurements, and finally we found a suite that can be delivered next week and although it is not what we initially thought we would buy, it has all the things we want as well as a higher price than we wanted, but its hard to get everything on our list at the good price.  We then had the problem of trying to get some money for our old suite to help offset the cost of the new one.  We advertised and had no offers and then on the third day we had a caller who wanted to view it and she was delighted with it as it was just what she was looking for.  They came yesterday with a trailer and hand truck and a strong son and off went the lounge suite to a new home, and amazingly they only live a couple of streets away. Today and for a few more days we are sitting on our camping chairs and a couple of occasional chairs which are named that because you can only be comfortable on them occasionally.

The large lounge doesn't fit the space

I just hope we have made the right decision, but the store told us that if we changed our mind we could return it within 7 days for a fairly small sum which might help if we really don't think it looks right.  Fingers crossed, we are not good at making these decisions.

Hope you all have a good week.

I have been having trouble commenting on your blog so giving it a try again today.

I had to decide what furniture to keep for our city apartment. What I selected fits fine but looks tired whereas it was quite lovely and admired in our old home. New places seem to beg for new things but I am resisting. I am sure your lovely new suite will delight you.

It is a hard decision to make. WE had the same problem when we downsized. We also had to wait 3 months for delivery. The new one is comfortable but not as much as the old one. Hope you get used to yours like we have had to.Thanks for reading my blog. I am slowing down at posting these days.

Hello from Edinburgh in Scotland! Thanks for your comment. Ah, downsizing... it would be sensible in some ways for us to do this, but we need lots of bedrooms for visiting offspring. It's difficult! Happy New Year to you.

Hi Pam, yes it is a big decision to make and its different for everyone. We are happy that we downsized, but we don't have family come to stay, just to visit so it works for us. Happy New Year and all the best for 2023.

Diane, thanks for your comments and guess what.. the new lounge suite just didn't feel as comfortable as it did in the store. They offered us a return (at a fee) but it was worth it as after sitting in the chairs at home for a half hour and more, we both had sore backs and I needed a cushion as well which really didnt help much! We managed to find another leather recliner suite that was perfect and we have enjoyed it now for a couple of months, and only one problem, when the recliner didn't return to its original position, they came out and fixed it,so we are more than happy and hope we don't have to look for another one for a verly long time!!
