Sunday Selections

Uluru

In 2006 we travelled to the Northern Territory in our caravan.  This was the first trip we did in our Jayco Westport caravan, which was new to us, and our second caravan, and we enjoyed the extra room in it and also the combined shower/toilet which made travelling much more comfortable.  I can't tell you how much better it is to have our own shower/toilet and never again want to use the public ones in caravan parks no matter how clean they might be.  If you have ever had to use the caravan park facilities in the middle of a very wet and windy night you will know what I mean.

We arrived at Uluru and on the first night there was a huge storm and we had to get up in the middle sof the night to check outside the van as it had sunk down in the mud and moved slightly.  There was not much we could do while it was pouring down, so we waited till the morning and Ron had to reposition the van and then we had to dry ourselves and our clothes and shoes, but many of those in the caravan park were in the same position as us, so it was quite a sociable time and we all made the best of a bad situation.  We didn't climb the Rock as it was closed because of the weather, but I wouldn't have climbed it anyway because the Anangu people ask that we respect their land and the spiritual significance of the area.  We walked around the base of the rock and it was a really interesting walk and so much to see, and I think it would have been better than climbing it and also a lot safer as there have been some deaths from climbing he rock.  We have been back again in 2015 and watched people climbing the rock and it looked very dangerous.  A lot of people only got to the
first rock outcrop called "chicken" rock, about 40 metres from the base,  where a lot of them chickended out.  There was a rope from there up to then assist people who were going to go further.  We saw families with young children clinging to the rope as they were too scared to go further up or down.

Here are some photos of some of our trip in 2006.

The change in colour when the weather changed was remarkable

We were lucky to see the Rock with rain on it as it doesn't rain often

Thank you.
This is a part of Australia I am yet to see - and I admire you for respecting the wishes of the first people and NOT climbing Uluru.

The Gorge at sunset is a gorgeous picture. What an interesting story about the rock. I can't imagine people taking their children on a climb like that. Scary! I so enjoy your pictures. Thank you for sharing!

Ayers Rock .,. I’ve heard of it , but never saw pictures... fascinating. I would love to see it like you did, but can’t imagine people climbing it. Such disrespect to the Anangu people , not to mention the danger...... I love reading about your caravan travels ... I think I told you we lived full time in ours for years... but we started out with pickup campers and even tents, and so I know exactly what you mean about your very own shower and toilet. We just bought a tiny new trailer in order to get safely across the country ... it’s tiny but it has a full bath and a big refrigerator ! All we need ))). Oh, there’s a bed and a stove and a microwave too.

That certainly wouldn't have been a pleasant experience in the rain in the park.
We've been a few times to the rock and enjoyed it. Sunset was spectacular, we always stayed at Curtin Springs.
Be safe, take care and keep well.

I would love to visit the rock one day, after I am allowed to leave the house

Sallie - thanks for your comments. We also started out with a tent when our children were young and progressed to a small caravan and then a larger one. I hope you get safely back home travelling in your trailer, it sounds like it has everything you need in a small space.

Margaret - the rain certainly was a challenge. We have stayed at Curtin Springs too, a lovely spot and you reminded me of a beautiful sunrise there so I'll have to search through my photos now. Take care.

Jo-Anne - I hope you get to Uluru as it is a magical place and when you first see it you will be surprised by the size. Take care.

Cheri - Glen Helen Gorge was beautiful and the sunsets were stunning and we found the sunsets were all great in the Centre of Australia. Take care.
