FLORAL FRIDAY

These beautiful wreath flowers were  photographed on our trip in 2009 in Western Australia.  Apparently they are often more profuse but in 2009 we had to hunt along many back roads before we came across these two but well worth the effort as they are very unusual and these were growing on the road and as you can see branches were placed near them to help protect them from the traffic passing by.

Lechenaultia macrantha, (also spelled Leschenaultia), called red wreath flower because of its flat, wreath-like growth habit to about 500mm across, grows mainly in the red sand country east of Geraldton and blooms in mid-spring. It's often found in the disturbed gravelly-sandy soil next to the road.

  1. As an obsessive gardener I love this - and the wreath flower is new to me.
    Thank you.
We grow lots of grevilleas and so many birds (another of my obsessions) love them.

  2. What a gorgeous an unusual flower, I've never seen one that grows like a wreath before! Love the grevillea, it's one of my all time favorites. I think the flowering gum is becoming a new favorite, too :)

    1. The flowering gum was given as a birthday present and we are enjoying it and it flowered the first year it was planted, and this year is even better.

  3. Those wreath flowers are just gorgeous. We found them when over that way a few years ago now, not a lot about then either.

  4. Friends were in WA last year and said the Wreath Flower was very prolific so I guess it just depends on the weather.
